What is a bura wind?

There has been a mighty wind battering Korucla for the last 3 days, I have been hibernating but Doka has been popping out and has taken a few photos that capture some of the wildness.

Korcula marina, 7 February 2012

The name ‘bura’ refers to a northern to north-eastern wind in the Adriatic, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, Italy, Greece, Slovenia, and Turkey.  A bura wind blows in gusts from the mainland, it is a common wind in the region during winter months although we sometimes expereince bura outside of the winter months.

The current wind is unusual as it has been blowing for several days without stopping and coupled with the snow that is currently on the Peljesac it is bringing an extra icy blast to the island.

Thankfully the bura clears the atmosphere and the days that follow the wind are generally sunny and clear.

Our thoughts are with those further north in the region who are experiencing extremely cold weather and large dumps of snow.  We hope you are all managing to keep warm and safe.
