What was the body tape at the Olympics all about?

First round of Olympics have been and gone and now we have the Paralympics to look forward to.

Was anyone else wondering what the strips of tape often seen on athletes was all about? I didn’t get the chance to watch much olympic action but the snippets that I did catch often featured a bit of coloured tape on an athlete…

German beach volleyball player Katrin Holtwick using Kinesio tape

I saw on a yahoo news feed that this tape is called Kinesio tape, and that it was developed by a Japanese doctor over 30 years ago, but what does it actually do?

Kinesio Taping gives support and stability to your joints and muscles without affecting circulation and range of motion. It is also used for Preventive Maintenance, Edema, and to treat pain. Somehow this magical tape separates the upper layer of the skin from muscle tissue and the extra space allows for muscles to fire and recover more quickly.

What did you learn during the Olympics?
